Robotic Tire Destacker

Greenbridge has advanced its strapping machines from standalone units to fully automated production lines, prioritizing efficiency, quality, and safety. A tire manufacturer sought Greenbridge’s expertise to implement a cutting-edge tire strapping line, and they searched for a partner to solve several known issues relating to previous robotic tire handling methods.

Integrated Industrial Technologies, Inc. was contracted to design a robotic solution to solve several commons issues encountered when destacking tires before transfer to the strapping system. Previously, a typical approach to depalletizing would pick tires in a stack of 2-3 tires. This operation would often damage tires if not stacked perfectly vertically on the incoming pallet.

By using a 3D vision system to locate each tire in combination with a high-speed FANUC M410iC/185 palletizing robot, the system was able to meet the cycle time requirements for the strapping line,

without damage to the tire. A custom servo gripper with special finger geometry allowed each tire to be picked up underneath the bead of the tire and accommodate tire sizes ranging from 15” ID to 24” ID.

This innovation not only improved efficiency but also enhanced workplace ergonomics, eliminating strain and injury risks associated with manual tire handling. Additionally, barcode scanning and advanced algorithms ensured accurate stacking and strapping, minimizing waste and maximizing storage capacity. The result was a highly efficient, automated system that boosted product quality, reduced errors, and elevated overall customer satisfaction.
