Position Summary

The Vision Engineer designs, develops, validates, and commissions machine-vision solutions for robotic guidance, inspection, quality verification, measurement, traceability, and bin-picking applications. This position combines optics, lighting, image processing, software, robotics, and industrial integration. The role is designed for an engineer with 0–5 years of experience who enjoys solving difficult application problems and turning vision concepts into reliable production systems.

Responsibilities

Machine Vision Engineering

  • Design and implement 2D and 3D machine-vision solutions for industrial automation.
  • Develop applications for robot guidance, localization, bin picking, inspection, measurement, traceability, and defect detection.
  • Select and configure cameras, optics, lighting, sensors, computing hardware, and vision platforms.
  • Perform feasibility studies and proof-of-concept testing before final system development.

System Integration & Validation

  • Collaborate with Robotics, Controls & Software, Mechanical Design, and Electrical Design Engineers to define integration requirements.
  • Establish calibration methods, coordinate systems, triggering, communications, mounting, lighting, and recovery strategies.
  • Integrate vision systems with robots, PLCs, HMIs, databases, and production equipment.
  • Develop and validate algorithms, inspection criteria, acceptance limits, fault handling, and system responses.

Commissioning, Risk & Customer Support

  • Evaluate failure modes including missed detections, false accepts, false rejects, calibration loss, and degraded image quality.
  • Support startup, commissioning, calibration, optimization, FAT, SAT, and production ramp-up.
  • Work directly with customers to define requirements, validation criteria, training, and support needs.
  • Evaluate rule-based and AI-enabled approaches based on reliability, data availability, maintainability, and validation needs.

Success in the First 12 Months

  • Deliver stable vision applications that meet defined inspection, guidance, and performance requirements.
  • Complete assigned engineering work on schedule while meeting technical and customer requirements.
  • Document feasibility results, calibration methods, acceptance limits, backups, and validation records.
  • Develop stronger capability in optics, lighting, image processing, robotics integration, and production troubleshooting.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • 0–5 years of experience in machine vision, robotics, automation, software development, or manufacturing systems.
  • Machine-vision experience gained through employment, internships, co-ops, training, academic projects, or independent projects.
  • Understanding of cameras, optics, lighting, image acquisition, calibration, and image-processing fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaborative engineering skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with Keyence, FANUC iRVision, Cognex, OpenCV, Python, C#, or similar platforms and tools.
  • Experience with robot-guided vision, automated inspection, quality control, bin picking, 3D vision, point clouds, or structured light.
  • Familiarity with PLC and robot integration, industrial networks, databases, statistical process control, or AI-enabled vision tools.

What Makes Someone Successful at I2T
