Mechanical Design Engineer

At Integrated Industrial Technologies (I2T), we believe great engineering makes people’s jobs better. We partner with American manufacturers to deliver automation, robotics, fabrication, and engineering solutions that improve productivity, enhance safety, and create measurable, lasting customer impact.

I2T is entering an important stage of growth. You will have the opportunity to expand your technical expertise, take ownership of meaningful work, collaborate directly with customers, and help shape the future of a growing engineering organization.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer creates the mechanical systems, tooling, fixtures, guarding, and equipment layouts that bring I2T automation projects to life. This position carries designs from concept through detailed documentation, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning. The role is designed for an engineer with 0–5 years of experience who enjoys practical machine design, engineering analysis, vendor coordination, and seeing designs become working equipment.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Analysis

  • Design mechanical systems and components for industrial automation and custom machinery.
  • Create 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Develop concepts, evaluate alternatives, and perform calculations, simulations, and design analysis.
  • Specify materials, fabricated components, purchased equipment, and mechanical hardware.

System Integration & Build Support

  • Collaborate with Robotics, Controls & Software, Electrical Design, and Vision Engineers on complete automation-cell designs.
  • Incorporate panels, sensors, cable routing, operator interfaces, cameras, lighting, robots, and safety devices into mechanical layouts.
  • Design end-of-arm tooling, fixtures, guarding, and equipment interfaces.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, installation, troubleshooting, and design changes throughout the build process.

Safety, Vendors & Customer Support

  • Participate in machine-safety risk assessments and incorporate guarding, safe access, clearances, and other mechanical risk-reduction measures.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to confirm dimensions, loads, mounting, availability, environmental requirements, and service access.
  • Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and resolution of mechanical issues.
  • Work with customers to clarify requirements and support successful project outcomes.

Success in the First 12 Months

  • Produce accurate, manufacturable designs and documentation using I2T standards.
  • Complete assigned design work on schedule while meeting technical, safety, and customer requirements.
  • Provide responsive support to fabrication, assembly, and commissioning teams.
  • Develop stronger capability in machine design, analysis, component selection, and multidisciplinary integration.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • 0–5 years of experience in mechanical design, machine design, automation, or manufacturing systems.
  • 3D CAD experience gained through employment, internships, co-ops, training, or academic projects.
  • Experience creating engineering drawings and design documentation.
  • Understanding of mechanical design, manufacturing processes, tolerancing, and material selection.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaborative engineering skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, FEA, motion studies, or similar design and analysis tools.
  • Experience designing custom machinery, automation equipment, fixtures, guarding, or end-of-arm tooling.
  • Familiarity with pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyors, robotics, machine safety, fabrication, or vendor coordination.

What Makes Someone Successful at I2T

  • Takes ownership of design quality and follows through during the build.
  • Enjoys hands-on problem solving and collaboration with fabrication teams.
  • Balances innovation with manufacturability, safety, cost, and schedule.
  • Responds constructively to design-review feedback.
  • Maintains organized models, drawings, bills of materials, and technical records.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in office, engineering, fabrication, and industrial manufacturing environments. Periodic travel and occasional work outside standard business hours may be required for customer meetings, project reviews, commissioning support, critical milestones, or escalations. All company and customer safety requirements, including appropriate PPE, must be followed.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with company match; paid time off and company holidays; life and disability insurance.
  • Company-paid technical training and professional development.
  • Opportunity to work on diverse automation projects, develop broad technical experience, and grow with I2T.
