Position Summary

The Fabricator builds, assembles, and modifies custom automation systems, machinery, structural weldments, and industrial equipment. This position works from engineering drawings and project requirements to produce accurate, durable, and professional-quality assemblies. The ideal candidate combines practical fabrication and welding ability with craftsmanship, problem solving, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.

Responsibilities

Fabrication & Assembly

  • Fabricate structural frames, machine bases, guarding, platforms, brackets, and custom components from engineering drawings and models.
  • Perform layout, fitting, MIG welding, cutting, drilling, grinding, and finishing operations.
  • Assemble mechanical systems, equipment, and fabricated components for automation and manufacturing projects.
  • Verify dimensions, alignment, fit, and function using appropriate measuring and inspection tools.

Quality & Workmanship

  • Take ownership of the quality, structural integrity, fit, and appearance of completed work.
  • Inspect work for conformance with drawings, specifications, welding requirements, and I2T quality standards.
  • Identify fabrication, material, or design concerns and communicate them before they create rework or schedule impacts.
  • Maintain welding equipment, fabrication tools, and an organized work area.

Project Execution & Teamwork

  • Complete assigned work accurately and efficiently in support of project schedules and customer commitments.
  • Collaborate with engineers, electricians, machinists, project managers, and other team members during fabrication and assembly.
  • Support equipment fit-up, testing, troubleshooting, modifications, and final preparation for delivery.
  • Contribute practical fabrication input that improves manufacturability, safety, quality, and build efficiency.

Continuous Improvement & Growth

  • Develop skills across welding, fabrication, mechanical assembly, inspection, and custom equipment build practices.
  • Share knowledge and support the development of less-experienced team members.
  • Recommend improvements to tooling, fixtures, work methods, material use, safety, and shop organization.
  • Help maintain a culture of craftsmanship, ownership, reliability, and continuous improvement.

Success in the First 12 Months

  • Establish a reputation for safe work, reliability, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
  • Consistently produce fabrication work that meets drawings and quality expectations with minimal rework.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and complete assigned work independently while raising questions early.
  • Contribute to on-time project completion by meeting work commitments and communicating risks promptly.
  • Identify at least one practical improvement to fabrication quality, safety, shop organization, or efficiency.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma, technical school training, apprenticeship, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Approximately 3 years of welding, fabrication, mechanical assembly, or related industrial experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, dimensions, and welding symbols.
  • Experience with MIG welding, layout, fitting, cutting, grinding, and common fabrication tools.
  • Ability to use tape measures, squares, calipers, levels, and other inspection tools accurately.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and commitment to safety and quality.

Preferred

  • TIG or stick welding experience and familiarity with AWS D1.1 practices.
  • Experience building custom machinery, automation equipment, guarding, platforms, or industrial structures.
  • Experience operating saws, ironworkers, presses, drills, plasma cutters, forklifts, cranes, or similar shop equipment.
  • Mechanical assembly, basic machining, or equipment troubleshooting experience.

What Makes Someone Successful at I2T

  • Takes pride in workmanship and treats quality as a personal responsibility.
  • Works safely, keeps an orderly work area, and respects shared tools and equipment.
  • Reads drawings carefully, verifies assumptions, and asks questions before proceeding when details are unclear.
  • Approaches fit-up and fabrication problems practically and communicates issues early.
  • Follows through on commitments and supports teammates in meeting project goals.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily on an active fabrication and assembly shop floor. The position regularly requires standing and walking for extended periods; bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and working in varied positions; lifting and handling materials, tools, and components; and safely operating welding and fabrication equipment. The environment may include noise, sparks, welding fumes, metal dust, temperature variation, moving equipment, and overhead lifting activities. Required PPE may include safety glasses, welding hood, gloves, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, and other protection appropriate to the task. Occasional overtime or adjusted hours may be required to support project deadlines. Customer-site travel is limited and is not a primary responsibility of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals to perform essential job functions.
