Position Summary

The Electrical Design Engineer develops the electrical architecture, control panels, machine wiring, safety circuits, and documentation for industrial automation and robotic systems. This position supports complete cell design from concept through panel fabrication, machine wiring, testing, and commissioning. The role is designed for an engineer with 0–5 years of experience who wants to build expertise in electrical design, industrial standards, system safety, and practical machine integration.

Responsibilities

Electrical Design

  • Design control panels and electrical systems for industrial automation and robotic applications.
  • Develop schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, and bills of materials.
  • Define electrical architecture and select power-distribution, control, motion, sensing, and safety components.
  • Design electrical interfaces for robots, tooling, conveyors, vision systems, and peripheral equipment.

System Integration & Build Support

  • Collaborate with Mechanical Design, Controls & Software, Robotics, and Vision Engineers to define complete system requirements.
  • Coordinate I/O, communications, power, triggering, lighting, cable routing, enclosures, and operator-interface requirements.
  • Support panel fabrication, machine wiring, end-of-arm tooling integration, system testing, and commissioning.
  • Participate in design reviews and troubleshoot electrical issues during assembly and startup.

Safety, Standards & Vendor Support

  • Participate in machine-safety risk assessments and develop electrical designs that address identified hazards.
  • Design safety circuits, emergency-stop systems, interlocks, disconnecting means, and protective devices.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable electrical codes, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Work with vendors to evaluate component ratings, compatibility, availability, and compliance.

Success in the First 12 Months

  • Produce accurate, buildable electrical designs and revision-controlled documentation using I2T standards.
  • Complete assigned engineering work on schedule while meeting technical, safety, and customer requirements.
  • Support panel fabrication, machine wiring, integration, and commissioning with timely issue resolution.
  • Develop stronger capability in control-panel design, component selection, machine safety, and applicable standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • 0–5 years of experience in electrical design, automation, robotics, controls, or manufacturing systems.
  • Experience creating electrical schematics through employment, internships, co-ops, training, or academic projects.
  • Familiarity with industrial electrical components and control-system fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and collaborative engineering skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar software.
  • Experience with industrial control panels, PLC hardware, I/O, drives, industrial networks, robotics, or machine wiring.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 79, the National Electrical Code, UL 508A, OSHA requirements, machine safeguarding, or panel fabrication.

What Makes Someone Successful at I2T

  • Takes ownership of design accuracy, safety, and follow-through.
  • Works closely with controls, mechanical, fabrication, and assembly teams.
  • Balances compliance with practical build and service requirements.
  • Approaches troubleshooting methodically and communicates issues early.
  • Maintains organized, accurate, and revision-controlled documentation.

Working Conditions
