Position Summary

The Controls & Software Engineer designs, develops, commissions, and supports software that powers industrial automation systems. This position focuses on PLC programming, HMI and SCADA development, industrial communications, and custom software integration. The role is designed for an engineer with 0–5 years of experience who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working across hardware and software, and delivering reliable solutions from design through production startup.

Responsibilities

Controls & Software Development

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain PLC, HMI, SCADA, and custom software applications.
  • Develop controls architectures, operating sequences, alarms, diagnostics, and fault-recovery strategies.
  • Configure and integrate industrial devices, networks, databases, and communication protocols.
  • Apply software-development and controls best practices to improve reliability, usability, and maintainability.

System Integration & Project Execution

  • Collaborate with Robotics, Vision, Mechanical Design, and Electrical Design Engineers to define interfaces and operating requirements.
  • Integrate robots, vision systems, drives, safety devices, production equipment, and manufacturing software.
  • Participate in design reviews and identify technical risks, integration needs, and testing requirements.
  • Support project planning, task estimating, documentation, and schedule commitments.

Safety, Commissioning & Customer Support

  • Translate risk-assessment requirements into interlocks, operating modes, alarms, and fault-recovery logic.
  • Implement and support validation of safety-related control functions with the Electrical Design Engineer and project team.
  • Perform startup, commissioning, debugging, FAT, SAT, and system optimization.
  • Work directly with customers to gather requirements, provide training, and resolve technical issues.

Success in the First 12 Months

  • Deliver reliable, maintainable controls software using I2T standards and documentation practices.
  • Complete assigned engineering work on schedule while meeting technical and customer requirements.
  • Contribute effectively to system integration, testing, commissioning, and customer startup.
  • Build working knowledge across controls platforms, industrial communications, safety, and multidisciplinary execution.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • 0–5 years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or software development.
  • PLC programming experience gained through employment, internships, co-ops, training, or academic projects.
  • Exposure to HMI, SCADA, or custom application development.
  • Understanding of industrial communications and software-to-hardware integration.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Ignition, FactoryTalk View, WinCC, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with C#, .NET, SQL, Python, Git, databases, MES, industrial networks, or cybersecurity concepts.
  • Exposure to robotics, machine vision, safety systems, commissioning, or customer-facing automation projects.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in office, engineering, fabrication, and industrial manufacturing environments. Periodic travel and occasional work outside standard business hours may be required for customer meetings, project reviews, commissioning support, critical milestones, or escalations. All company and customer safety requirements, including appropriate PPE, must be followed.
